Without a doubt, there is some blurriness in the line delineating the investor relations and equity research businesses. From a company’s point of view, both types of professionals can be essential in helping achieve the goals of share price appreciation and liquidity, and having improved access to the capital markets. In fact, many companies have historically relied on their investor relations firm to “get” them high quality research coverage. Because of this tight interrelationship between our industry and the IR industry, we view investor relations firms as some of our more important and valuable business partners. Furthermore, because we are not in and will not be in the investor relations business, we can often serve as a great source of new clients for our IR partners. Functionally, we work closely with our IR partners in terms of helping them achieve their goals for each of their clients. First of all, we make all of our content available to each of our IR partners for distribution to all of their contacts, in both electronic and physical form. We also help specific IR professionals more thoroughly understand our views on each of their clients’ companies, thus assisting them in crafting the most effective messaging for their clients. Lastly, from time to time we bring specific companies to the attention of professional money managers, who may make an investment in the companies’ shares or take part in a financing transaction, such as a private placement. These investment managers then often form a relationship with the relevant investor relations professional as well, thus benefiting everyone involved.
